About the Font Remix Tools
The Font Remix Tools were devised and coded by type designer Tim Ahrens, whose type designs are published by Just Another Foundry. The development of RMX began in 2003, and after intensive testing and feedback from other designers version 1.0 was published in 2007. The progress of the Remix Tools was presented at the ATypI conferences 06, 07 and 08, and at Robothon 09 (video).
The mathematical principles of scaling while retaining the stroke weights, as well as an objective evaluation of the results, were the subject of Tim’s essay (PDF) written in 2006 as part of the MA Typeface Design programme at the University of Reading. This essay has been published in the academic journals Document Numérique and Digital Creativity.
Further research topics include optical sizes, on which he has published the book Size-specific adjustments to type designs in 2009 (second edition in 2014). He has lectured at the ESAD in Porto and the Moscow University of Printing Arts, and has given talks at Typo Berlin and CPH Typo Copenhagen.
